HM USA Travel Guide - Buying a car

If you are planning to stay in the USA for a longer period, you could consider buying an used car. By buying an used car instead of renting one you may save some money. After you have bought a car you need to register and insure it. At the end of your trip you will have to sell your car again.
Also when you are under 21 and can't rent a car, buying one might be an option. But keep in mind that in that case the cost of insurance will be very high.

Buying a used car involves some difficulties. Finding and buying a decent car may take some days. Then you have to register it. Car registration in the USA is regulated per state. If you want to register a car then you (often) must have a fixed address in the state you are registering. Because you don't have a fixed address in that state you might get into some problems.

Also insuring your car may cause some difficulties because you (often) must have a driver license from the state you are insuring your car. In the Netherlands is an insurance company where you can insure a car even before you have bought one.

So buying a car involves quite some problems and it will take some days before you have arranged everything. Therefore I think that buying a car is only advisable when you are going to stay in the USA for a longer period of time.

To make buying a car more easy some companies offer an all in service. They make all arrangements (insurance, registration, and so on) for you. For instance this company can make all arrangements for you: Transatlantic Automobile

There are also agencies in Germany and Switserland but I haven't found any web sites (yet).
