Introduction
The Mount Evans Scenic Byway is America's highest paved automobile road.
The road starts near Idaho Springs and reaches the summit of Mnt Evans after 45 Km (28 mi.).
During this one hour drive (one way) the road climbs 7000 feet to reach an altitude of 14.100 feet.
The Mount Evans summit (14.264 feet) is 154 feet higher then the nearby Pikes Peak.
The Mnt Evans byway can be divided into two sections. The first section, highway 103 from Idaho springs to Echo Lake is open year round. Highway 5 leads from Echo Lake to the summit and is open from Memorial day through Labor day. However, due to snow fall, wind or icy conditions (even during summer) higway 5 is often closed or is only opened as far as Summit lake.
